Empowering India’s Elderly: Health and Community Initiatives
Ageing is a natural process, a journey of life that every individual experiences. It brings immense opportunities, like the wisdom and contributions of older generations, but also challenges that required comprehensive solutions. At Admighty Foundation, we are a non-profit philanthropy startup. We have held Special Consultative Status from ECOSOC of the United Nations since 2022. We believe that older people are a valuable resource for any society thus we are in process to start a Old Age Home.We focus on Health, Education, and Environment Initiatives. Our goal is to create a world that values and supports its ageing population. We guarantee they live with dignity, health, and purpose.
The Landscape of Ageing in India
Key Statistics and Trends
- India’s senior population (aged 60+) stands at 104 million, comprising 8.6% of the total population (Census 2011).
- Among these seniors, women outnumber males, highlighting specific challenges related to health, security, and societal roles.
- By 2030, India’s ageing population is expected to rise significantly, necessitating enhanced focus on infrastructure, policies, and care systems.
This demographic shift reflects increasing longevity due to advancements in healthcare and living standards. Yet, the decline of traditional joint family systems has left many seniors vulnerable to loneliness, neglect, and economic insecurity.
The Social and Health Challenges of Ageing
Changing Family Structures
India’s rich tradition of joint families once ensured a safety net for elders. Rapid urbanization, migration, and changing social norms have caused these support systems to break down. As a result, seniors must navigate the complexities of modern life alone.
Health and Well-Being in Later Years
As individuals age, they face a host of health challenges, including chronic illnesses, reduced mobility, and cognitive decline. To counter these issues, it is essential to:
- Promote physical activity to keep strength and independence.
- Encourage a nutritious diet tailored to seniors’ specific needs.
- Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other harmful substances.
- Cultivate a positive attitude to enhance mental well-being and resilience.
The Rise of Super-Agers
Recent studies have identified a unique group among the elderly. They are known as super-agers. These individuals in their 70s and 80s have the mental and physical capabilities of people decades younger. Their behaviors, habits, and health indicators give valuable insights into healthy ageing.
Admighty Foundation actively integrates these findings into its programs, encouraging seniors to adopt lifestyles that foster vitality and longevity.
Government Initiatives Supporting Senior Citizens
India has made significant strides in creating policies and programs for the welfare of older adults. Key initiatives include:
- National Policy on Older Persons (1999):
Aims to guarantee financial security, healthcare, shelter, and active participation in society for seniors. - Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act (2007):
It provides legal protection for elders. This ensures they are cared for and respected. - National Policy for Senior Citizens (2011):
Focuses on healthcare, safety, and social engagement for older adults. - National Programme for Health Care of Elderly (NPHCE):
Provides specialized healthcare services at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. - Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres:
Offers affordable and quality healthcare services tailored to the needs of the elderly.
Admighty Foundation collaborates with these frameworks. It bridges gaps and ensures community-based, integrated care approaches. These approaches cater to the unique needs of seniors.
